The Freewheelers' 10th anniversary rally was held in the Hauraki Plains Memorial Hall, Ngatea on 9-11 October, 1999.

How it all started - Ian North's speech

Good morning.

Isn't it hard to believe that it's 10 years since the birth of the freewheeleers.

But I still remember that birth.. The actual date was Sunday 27th June 1999, about 11 am, and it was in the supper room of the Ngarua Hall.

Now the sexy bit preceeding this birth, for me anyway, started back in Feb 1999 when I read a letter in the Movanner issue #217 from a single member questioning the policy on rally fees for single occupants

Another letter appeared in the April issue on the same subject. This letter was written by a Vera Andrew. I looked up the membership list and got Vera's phone number. I noted that it was a Thames number so it wouldn't be a toll call for me from Pauanui. With grandiose visions of a gorgeous blonde coming to the phone, I rang Vera on 14 May suggesting we get together and talk about holding a rally for single movanners.

Vera rang me back on 23 May stating that she had rung 30 odd single members in the Hauraki/Coro area for a show of interest in a singles rally

On 28 May Vera came over to Pauanui to play golf and stayed on my POP. That night we dicussed this singles thing and it was agreed that if I arranged a date and venue for an inaugural rally she would advise those people who had shown an interest

On 29 May I rang Beryl Blewett, rally marshal for the Waikato area rally to be held at Ngarua on 25-27 June advising her that a number of single members would be attending her rally and asked that we all be parked together. She agrred to do this.

I then advised Vera of this arrangement and she in turn advised those people who had expressed an interest, that a rally would be held on 25 June at Ngarua.

About 20 singles arrived at the rally and we had a great weekend. The singles took over a table in one corner of the hall on the Saturday night and we got to know one another. Good hall, good floor, good music, lots of dancing.

We met in the supper room on the Sunday morning and agreed on two things:

  1. Our name [Freewheelers] proposed by June Teague.
  2. Our next meeting, at June's property at Maketu.

After the meeting in the supper room we collected outside the hall and I took a photo of the original group using the delayed action thingy on my camera ---- and here is that historic photo [see below].

I then wrote a letter to the Movanner editor on 28 June to be published in the August 1999 issue #220 advising that we would be holding our first Freewheeler rally at Maketu on 3-5 Sept 1999.

This letter was in fact published in the movanner ---- and the rest of the story is now history..
